‘UNMIL Total Withdrawal Unprecedented’

first_imgLofa County Representative Eugene Fallah Kparkar has described as unprecedented the United Nations Mission in Liberia’s (UNMIL) total withdrawal in June, especially in the wake of the mysterious deaths of citizens, coupled with the current global socioeconomic downturn.Representative Kparkar who recently returned to the country from attending the Pan African Parliament Union warned that the unwholesome act of taking the lives of innocent people has the propensity to undermine peace and democracy, which he said Liberians have enjoyed over the last decade, and possibly threatens the 2017 general and presidential elections. The Lofa Lawmaker called on the United Nations to see the need to at least keep a residual unit to help beef up the strength of the national security sector.Rep. Kparkar challenged the government to remain vigilant and clampdown on perpetrators of the heinous crimes of ritualistic killings, armed robberies and gang-rapes, among other crimes.Commenting on his recent mission to South Africa, Kparkar said ECOWAS and the Pan African Parliamentary Union recently hosted briefing sessions which successfully dealt with illicit financial plots that threaten the entire world, especially Africa, as it relates to money laundering. He said as head of the Central Executive Parliamentary Committee of PANU he organized a two-day briefing with former South African President Thabo Mbeki serving as chief panelist, where African countries were praised for ratifying charters on economy and elections. Rep. Kparkar, who represents Liberia through the House of Representatives at the Pan African Parliamentary Union, disclosed that following the briefing session, his Liberian delegation visited the troubled Darfur Region in Sudan on a peace mission, Southern Sudan and other electoral missions in Tanzania, Guinea Bissau, Algeria, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland.“On these missions we gained vast experience, which when introduced here will be of great help with our fledging peace and democracy,” the Lofa lawmaker concluded.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
